(01) About this tool

What the Twitter Card Generator does

When a link is posted on X (Twitter), the site reads a handful of twitter: meta tags from the page and turns them into a card: a headline, a picture and a line of description attached to the post. Pages without the tags fall back to Open Graph if present, and otherwise show a bare URL that almost nobody clicks. The tags take two minutes to add and apply to every future share of the page.

Pick the card type, enter your site and author handles, the title, description, image and its alt text, and the generator writes the tags ready for the <head> of the page. Summary cards show a small square thumbnail next to the text; summary_large_image stretches the picture across the full width and is what most publishers use. Player cards embed a video or audio player, and app cards point to a listing in the App Store or Google Play. The preview below the form shows the summary and large-image layouts with your real image loaded.

The tool runs entirely in your browser. Once the tags are live, paste the URL into X's Card Validator or simply post it in a draft to confirm the card renders; X caches the first result for about a week.

(02) How to use

Step by step

  1. 01Choose the card type. summary_large_image is the usual choice for articles and landing pages.
  2. 02Enter the @handle of the site and, for articles, the @handle of the author.
  3. 03Add the title (70 characters or fewer), a description under 200 characters and the absolute URL of the image with alt text.
  4. 04For player and app cards, fill in the player URL and size or the app IDs for each store.
  5. 05Copy the tags into the <head>, publish, and check the result with X's validator.
(03) FAQ

Common questions

X falls back to og:title, og:description and og:image when the twitter: versions are missing, so the minimum is twitter:card plus the Open Graph set. Add the twitter: tags when you want a different image crop or shorter text on X than on Facebook.

A 2:1 image of at least 300 by 157 pixels; 1200 by 628 is the common choice and also fits the Open Graph card. For the plain summary card the thumbnail is square, so put the subject in the centre or supply a separate 1:1 picture. Images must be under 5 MB and JPG, PNG, WEBP or GIF.

It is optional but worth adding. Screen readers read it to blind users, X shows it when the image fails to load, and it is a free place to describe the picture in plain words. It is limited to 420 characters.

X caches cards for roughly seven days. Changing the image URL (not just the file behind it) usually forces a fresh fetch. The Card Validator used to clear the cache; today posting the link from a private account and deleting it is the common workaround.

Only from an allow-listed domain, and YouTube already serves its own player cards. For your own site a player card needs an HTTPS iframe URL, a width and height and a fallback image; for a video hosted on YouTube, link to the YouTube page or use summary_large_image with a thumbnail.
