What the Open Graph Tag Generator does
Open Graph is the set of meta tags that Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack, Discord and most chat apps read when someone pastes a link. Without them the preview is whatever the scraper guesses: a cropped logo, the first sentence of the cookie banner, or nothing at all. With them you control the headline, the picture and the description that appear next to every share, which is often the difference between a link people tap and one they scroll past.
This generator writes the tags for you. Enter the title, type, canonical URL, image, description, site name and locale, and the tags appear on the right ready to paste into the <head> of the page. When the type is article you also get the author and publication time tags. The preview card below the form mimics the Facebook and LinkedIn layout so you can see how the image crops and where a long title will be cut.
The tool checks the image URL and loads the picture in the preview; if it does not load, the card tells you, which usually means the address is relative, behind a login or blocked by hotlink protection. Everything runs in your browser.
Step by step
- 01Enter the page title as it should read in the share card, up to about 60 characters.
- 02Pick the type: website for most pages, article for blog posts and news, product for a shop page, profile for a person.
- 03Paste the canonical URL of the page and the absolute URL of the share image, ideally 1200 by 630 pixels.
- 04Write a one or two sentence description and set the site name and locale.
- 05Copy the tags into the <head> of the page, then re-scrape the URL in the Facebook Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn Post Inspector.
Common questions
Use 1200 by 630 pixels (a 1.91:1 ratio) under about 1 MB in JPEG or PNG. Facebook shows anything over 600 by 315 as a large card; smaller images become a thumbnail beside the text. Keep the important part centred because LinkedIn and some chat apps crop the edges.
Each platform caches the first scrape for days. Paste the URL into Facebook's Sharing Debugger and click "Scrape again", or into LinkedIn's Post Inspector, to refresh. WhatsApp and Telegram cache per device and cannot be forced; adding a query string to the URL is the workaround.
Yes. Facebook treats og:url as the identity of the object, so likes and share counts group under it. Set it to the same absolute URL as the canonical tag; a mismatch splits the counts between two addresses.
Not for ranking. Google may read og:image when choosing a thumbnail for Discover and sometimes falls back to og:description for the snippet, but the title tag and meta description remain the primary source. Write both sets.
Language and territory joined by an underscore, such as en_US, en_GB, ur_PK or de_DE. It is the only Open Graph field with an underscore; using a hyphen (en-US) is ignored by Facebook.
