Generate YouTube tags
Up to fifteen autocomplete requests to YouTube for your keyword and the keyword plus a letter; suggestions are merged and ranked.
What the YouTube Tag Generator does
YouTube's autocomplete is the most honest keyword tool for the platform: every suggestion is a phrase real people type into the search box often enough for YouTube to predict it. Tags built from those phrases describe a video in the words viewers use, which is what tags are for. YouTube itself says tags play a minimal role in discovery and matter mostly for commonly misspelled words, but they still help the system understand a new video from a small channel, and the same phrases belong in your title and description.
This generator asks YouTube's suggestion endpoint for your keyword and for the keyword followed by each letter of the alphabet, the way keyword researchers do by hand. The answers are merged, duplicates removed and the phrases ranked by how many of those queries returned them, because a phrase that keeps appearing is one YouTube associates strongly with the topic. The result is a ranked list and a comma-separated string trimmed to the 500 characters the tag box accepts.
The suggestions change with the language setting and over time, so a list made today for a seasonal topic will look different in three months. Treat the output as a starting list: keep the phrases that match what is actually in your video, drop the ones that do not, and never add tags for unrelated popular topics, which YouTube treats as misleading metadata.
Step by step
- 01Enter the main topic of the video in two to five words, for example "sourdough starter".
- 02Choose the language of your audience; suggestions differ between English, Urdu, Hindi and the others.
- 03Click Generate tags. The tool makes up to fifteen autocomplete requests, which takes a few seconds.
- 04Remove any phrase that does not describe your video, then copy the tag string into YouTube Studio.
- 05Use the top two or three phrases in the title and the first lines of the description as well.
Common questions
A little. YouTube states that tags have a minimal effect on discovery and that the title, thumbnail and description matter far more. Tags still help with misspellings and alternate names, and they give a brand-new channel a small amount of context. Spend five minutes on them, not an hour.
The tag box accepts 500 characters in total. Ten to twenty specific phrases are usually plenty; filling the box with every variation adds nothing. Put the most important phrase first, since some tools and viewers read the first tags as the primary topic.
YouTube's autocomplete reflects what people in the selected language actually search. For topics popular in Pakistan or India, English seeds often return Roman Urdu or Hinglish phrases such as "leather jacket press karne ka tarika". If those phrases match your audience, they are good tags.
How many of the autocomplete queries (the seed alone and the seed plus each letter) returned that phrase. A phrase returned by several queries is one YouTube ties tightly to the topic. Phrases returned once are usually longer, more specific searches, which can be worth targeting with a dedicated video.
