What the Markdown to HTML Converter does
Markdown is the shorthand most writers draft in: a hash for a heading, asterisks for emphasis, a dash for a list item. Websites, email tools and many CMS fields want HTML. This converter turns one into the other as you type, showing the HTML source on one side and how it renders on the other, so you can paste the markup into a page template, a newsletter editor or a product description field and know what it will look like.
The parser is written for this page and follows the CommonMark conventions for the features people actually use: ATX and underlined headings, paragraphs, bold, italic and strikethrough, inline code, fenced code blocks with a language class, blockquotes, ordered and unordered lists including nested ones, links and images with titles, horizontal rules, pipe tables with column alignment, and hard line breaks from two trailing spaces or a backslash. Raw HTML in the text is escaped, so a stray angle bracket cannot break the page you paste into, and code blocks keep their content exactly as written.
Conversion runs entirely in your browser; the text is not sent anywhere. The output is unstyled HTML with no inline styles or classes beyond the language class on code blocks, which is what most editors expect.
Step by step
- 01Paste or type Markdown in the left box. The HTML and the preview update on every change.
- 02Check the preview for anything that did not convert as expected, usually a missing blank line before a list or a table.
- 03Copy the HTML with the button on the output block, or select the preview to copy rich text into an editor.
- 04Paste into your CMS's HTML or source view, not the visual editor, so the tags are kept.
Common questions
CommonMark for the core syntax, plus the GitHub extensions that are in everyday use: tables, strikethrough with two tildes and fenced code blocks. Footnotes, task-list checkboxes and definition lists are not supported; they are rare outside GitHub and documentation tools.
Raw HTML in the Markdown is escaped on purpose. It keeps the output safe to paste anywhere and avoids half-converted markup, but it means you cannot mix <div> or <span> into the text. Write the structure in Markdown and add classes or wrappers in the target editor afterwards.
Indent the child items by two or more spaces (or a tab) under the parent item. Ordered and unordered lists can be mixed at different levels. A blank line between items turns the list into loose paragraphs, which is also valid HTML.
Yes. In the separator row under the header, use :--- for left, :---: for centre and ---: for right. The converter writes the alignment as a style attribute on each cell, since the align attribute is obsolete in HTML5.
No, only the body fragment, because that is what a CMS field or template expects. If you need a standalone file, wrap the output in <!doctype html>, <html>, <head> with a charset and <body> yourself.
