What the HTML to Markdown Converter does
Moving content out of a web page or a WYSIWYG editor usually means wading through HTML full of spans, inline styles and tracking attributes. Markdown keeps the structure (headings, lists, emphasis, links) and drops the noise, which is why documentation systems, static site generators, GitHub and most note apps store text in it. This converter takes HTML and writes the equivalent Markdown, so a page can be moved into a repository, a knowledge base or a plain-text editor without retyping it.
Paste the HTML, a fragment or a whole document, and the Markdown appears as you type. The converter parses the markup with the browser's own HTML parser, then walks the element tree: h1 to h6 become hash headings, p becomes paragraphs, strong and b become bold, em and i italic, del and s strikethrough, code and pre become inline and fenced code, blockquote is prefixed with >, ul and ol become lists with nesting preserved, a and img become links and images with their titles, hr becomes a rule, br a hard break, and tables become pipe tables. Script, style, noscript, head metadata, comments and hidden template content are dropped. Characters that would be read as Markdown in plain text, such as a leading asterisk or hash, are escaped.
The work happens in your browser; the HTML is not uploaded. Copy the result with the button or compare it against the source side by side.
Step by step
- 01Paste the HTML into the left box. A full page with <html> and <head> is fine; only the body is converted.
- 02Read the Markdown on the right and check headings and lists kept their levels.
- 03If the source used divs and line breaks instead of paragraphs, add blank lines in the result where paragraphs should split.
- 04Copy the Markdown and paste it into your editor or repository.
Common questions
Their text content is kept and their wrapper is dropped. A div or span contributes its children; a form or iframe is removed with nothing in its place; a video or audio element becomes a link to its source if it has one. Inline styles, classes and ids are discarded because Markdown has no place for them.
Partly. Markdown tables are a plain grid, so colspan and rowspan are flattened: a merged cell occupies its first position and the remaining positions are left empty. Tables without a header row get an empty header so that Markdown renderers still recognise them.
Text that would otherwise be read as Markdown syntax is escaped: an asterisk at the start of a line, a hash before a heading-like line, underscores inside words, square brackets. The backslashes disappear when the Markdown is rendered. Code blocks are never escaped.
It keeps them exactly as written in the href. If you converted a page saved from a site and want absolute links, add a <base href="https://site.com/"> tag to the HTML before converting and the browser resolves them for you.
