What the Slug Generator does
A slug is the last part of a URL that names the page, such as /blog/how-to-write-a-slug/. Search engines read it, visitors glance at it before they click, and once a page has been shared or linked the slug is painful to change. Getting it right at publish time saves a redirect later. This generator takes a title and produces a slug that follows the conventions Google documents: lowercase letters, digits and hyphens only, no accents or punctuation, and no runs of hyphens.
Paste a title and the slug appears as you type. You can strip common stop words (the, a, of, and so on) to keep the slug short, cap it at a number of characters without cutting a word in half, and pick an underscore separator if an old site used one. Accented letters are transliterated, so "Café résumé" becomes cafe-resume rather than disappearing. Nothing is sent to our server; the conversion runs in your browser.
Keep slugs short and descriptive. A slug that repeats the main keyword once is enough; stuffing three variations in it looks spammy and gets truncated in search results. Dates and numbers that will go stale ("2024-guide") are best left out unless the content is tied to that year.
Step by step
- 01Type or paste the page title in the box.
- 02Choose whether to remove stop words and set a maximum length if your CMS or style guide has one.
- 03Pick the hyphen separator unless you must match an older URL scheme that used underscores.
- 04Copy the slug and paste it into the URL field of your CMS.
Common questions
Hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator, so "red-shoes" is read as two words, while "red_shoes" is read as one token. Underscores are only worth keeping when you have to match URLs that already exist and rank.
It keeps the slug short and readable, which matters more than the words themselves. Search engines ignore stop words in URLs, so dropping "the" and "of" costs nothing, but keep one when it changes the meaning, as in "how-to-not-rank".
Three to six words is the common range. There is no hard limit, but long slugs get truncated in search results and are harder to share. If the title is long, keep the words that describe the topic and drop the rest.
Latin letters with accents are converted to their plain forms (é becomes e, ü becomes u). Characters from other scripts are removed, because many systems still break on non-ASCII URLs. For a site in Urdu or Arabic, write the slug in Latin transliteration.
