XML Sitemap Validator
Validate an XML sitemap or index: well-formed XML, URL count, loc, lastmod, priority and changefreq, limits and live URL checks.
Validate an XML sitemap
Plain or gzip sitemaps and sitemap indexes. Files up to 2 MB are read in full; the first ten URLs are requested live.
What the XML Sitemap Validator does
An XML sitemap is the list of pages you want search engines to crawl, with optional hints about when each one last changed. Google reads it to find new pages faster and to decide what to recrawl, but only if the file is valid: well-formed XML in the sitemaps.org namespace, absolute URLs on the same host, correctly formatted dates, and at most 50,000 URLs or 50 MB per file. A sitemap generated by a plugin is usually fine on day one and drifts afterwards: the site moves to https while the sitemap still lists http, deleted pages stay listed, or a template change produces a stray character that breaks the XML.
This validator fetches the sitemap (plain or gzip-compressed), checks that it parses as XML and reports the exact line of any error, then walks every entry. It counts URLs, flags relative or foreign-host locs, duplicates, invalid lastmod dates, changefreq values outside the allowed list and priorities outside 0.0 to 1.0, and compares the totals with the size limits. For a sitemap index it lists the child sitemaps without fetching each one. For a regular sitemap it also requests the first ten URLs and reports which ones answer 200, redirect or fail, because a sitemap full of redirects and 404s teaches Google to trust it less.
Run it after a migration, after installing or changing an SEO plugin, and whenever Search Console reports "Couldn't fetch" or a sudden drop in discovered pages.
Step by step
- 01Enter the sitemap URL, for example https://example.com/sitemap.xml or a sitemap_index.xml.
- 02Click Validate. The file is downloaded and parsed; the first ten URLs are requested.
- 03If the XML is not well-formed, the line numbers of the errors are shown; fix those first.
- 04Read the issues list and the spot-check table, then scan the entries for the rows marked with problems.
- 05For an index, copy each child sitemap URL into the tool to validate it on its own.
Common questions
W3C Datetime: a date such as 2026-10-12, or a full timestamp with a timezone such as 2026-10-12T08:30:00+05:00 or 2026-10-12T03:30:00Z. Values like "12/10/2026" or a Unix timestamp are invalid and ignored. The date should be the real last change of the content; Google stops trusting lastmod on sites where every entry carries today's date.
Google has said for years that it ignores both; Bing reads changefreq loosely. They do no harm when valid, but invalid values are still flagged here because they point to a generator that may be making other mistakes. Spend the effort on accurate lastmod dates instead.
A sitemap can only list URLs on the host and protocol it is served from, unless you verify the other host in Search Console or reference the sitemap from the other host's robots.txt. www.example.com and example.com are different hosts for this rule, as are http and https.
Each check is a live request to your server and the whole run has to finish in a few seconds. Ten in document order is enough to catch a systematic problem such as every URL redirecting to a trailing slash. Use the Broken Links Checker on individual pages for more.
Files up to 2 MB download fully, which covers tens of thousands of URLs in plain XML and more when gzipped. Larger files are cut at 2 MB and the result says so; the counts then cover the first part only. Splitting such files and using an index is the recommended structure anyway.
