Hreflang Checker
List a page's hreflang tags, validate the codes, check x-default and self-reference, and confirm alternates link back.
Check a page's hreflang tags
The page and up to 20 of its alternates are fetched, so the check takes a few seconds on big language sets.
What the Hreflang Checker does
Hreflang annotations tell Google and Yandex which language and country each version of a page is meant for, so a searcher in Lahore sees the Urdu page and a searcher in Manchester sees the British English one. They are also one of the easiest SEO signals to get wrong, because a correct set depends on every page in the group agreeing: each page must list every alternate, include itself, use exactly the right codes and, ideally, name a fallback with x-default. One mistake on one page breaks the pair silently; nothing fails visibly, the wrong version simply keeps ranking.
This checker fetches the page, collects the hreflang entries from <link rel="alternate"> tags and from the HTTP Link header, and validates each code against the ISO language, script and region formats Google accepts, with specific messages for the common slips such as en-UK, underscores instead of hyphens or three-letter language codes. It then checks for a self-reference and x-default and fetches up to twenty of the alternates to confirm each one links back to the page you entered, which is the return-tag rule that most hreflang errors in Search Console come from.
The verdict ranks the problems: invalid codes and missing return links are failures, a missing self-reference or x-default is a warning, and a clean set passes. Fix the page, then run the same check from one of the alternates to confirm the set from the other side.
Step by step
- 01Enter the URL of one language version of the page.
- 02Click Check. The page is fetched, then each alternate (up to 20) is fetched to verify the return link.
- 03Scan the entries table: invalid codes are marked with the reason, and the row that matches the page itself is tagged Self.
- 04Read the return-link table: any alternate without a link back needs its own hreflang set updated.
- 05Add x-default if the verdict asks for it, then re-run from a second language version.
Common questions
Page A says page B is its French version, but page B does not list page A as an alternate. Google treats hreflang as a mutual agreement; without the return link the annotation on A is ignored. Every page in a set must carry the complete list, including itself.
A two-letter ISO 639-1 language code (en, fr, ur), optionally followed by a hyphen and a two-letter ISO 3166-1 country code (en-GB, pt-BR), with an optional ISO 15924 script code in between for languages written in several scripts (zh-Hans, zh-Hant-TW). Country-only values like "GB" are invalid, as is en-UK, since the United Kingdom is GB.
It is strongly recommended. It names the page shown to people whose language or country is not in your list, typically the English version or a language selector. Without it Google guesses, and the guess is often not the page you would choose.
Yes, through xhtml:link entries in the XML sitemap, and that is often easier for large sites. This tool reads the page HTML and the Link header only, so a sitemap-based set will show as no annotations here; validate the sitemap with the Sitemap Validator instead.
To keep the run fast the tool fetches at most twenty alternates and stops after about eight seconds of fetching. Pages with more versions get the first twenty checked; run the tool again from another version to cover the rest.
